Personal Narrative My Personal Experience - 1121 Words

My personal experience Put the gun down! Put the gun down! Pow Pow Pow. The gun shots cracked into the air as loud as thunder. One after another. We live day by day not knowing our end. In the blink of an eye our lives can be changed forever. Its life, yet even in knowing this we never expect tragedy to find us. We never expect it to affect our lives and the people we know and love. I’m going to share with you the day tragedy found my life. I was a junior at Panther Creek High School in Cary, NC. Which was ranked one of the top 5 safest cities in the country. Serious crime was not a factor there, it almost never happened. February 11th, 2011 changed that. It was a Friday that started like any other, I woke up got ready and drove to school.†¦show more content†¦There had to be hundred or more bystanders watching waiting to see what was going to happen hoping no one would be hurt. Two hours had passed by of complete chaos when finally, we heard the police officers yell put the gun down! Put the gun down! Two people came out the front door of the bank. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing it was our friend Devon I recognized his red â€Å"NC STATE† sweatshirt he wore it all the time. He had a woman in front of him kind of like a shield and was holding a gun to her head. The police kept yelling to put the gun down and he didn’t he kept walking down the side walk in front of the bank it felt like hours passed but it was only about a minute that passed when the gun shots started. They hit him one after another watching my friend who I knew for over 4 years who was kind, gentle and so full of life become so lifeless in a matter of seconds was an image that will forever be burned in my mind. Everyone around me was relieved it was over to them he committed a crime he was the bad guy but to me this was nothing but tragedy I didn’t understa nd not at all. What happened? Why did this happen? Why did he do this? A few hours later the scene was cleared almost like nothing happened the only thing left was the stain of his blood left on the sidewalk and many questions about why this happened and everyone was searching for the answers. Discover the Benefits of Whole Class Instruction

Whole group instruction is direct instruction using traditional textbooks or supplemental materials with minimal differentiation in either content or assessment. It is sometimes referred to as whole class instruction. It is typically provided through teacher-led direct instruction. The teacher provides the entire class with the same lesson regardless of where any particular student is. The lessons are typically designed to reach the average student in the classroom. The Teaching Process Teachers evaluate understanding throughout the lesson. They may reteach certain concepts when it appears that many students in the class do not understand them. The teacher will likely provide student learning activities designed to practice new skills, and that will also build on previously learned skills. In addition, whole group instruction is a great opportunity to review previously learned skills to help a student maintain their proficiency in using them. Whole group instruction is easy to plan for. It takes a lot more time to plan for a small group or individual instruction than it does for an entire group. Addressing the whole group takes one plan, where addressing small groups of students takes multiple plans or approaches. The key to planning for whole group instruction is two part. First, the teacher must develop a lesson that engages students throughout the entirety of a lesson.  Second, the teacher must be able to teach the concepts in such a way that the majority of the class grasp the information that is being presented.  Doing these two things helps decrease the amount of time needed for reteaching and/or small group instruction. The First Step in a System Whole group instruction is a terrific tool for introducing new material. Introducing concepts in a whole group setting gives the teacher the opportunity to present the basic material to every student at once. Many students will pick up these new concepts through whole group instruction, particularly if the lessons are dynamic and engaging. Trying to introduce a new concept in a small group setting is both cumbersome and repetitive.  Whole group instruction ensures that every student is exposed to key concepts and new information on a particular topic. It should, however, serve a first step in the learning process. Whole group instruction helps determine a baseline for learning and assessment. Within any class, there are going to be students who pick up new concepts quickly and those who take a little more time. Teachers utilize the information gained from whole group instruction to plan for the future. Teachers must conduct both informal and formal assessments as they move throughout a whole group lesson. If the teacher is receiving little to no feedback from students when questions are posed, the teacher probably needs to go back and try a different approach.  When a majority of the class seems to have grasped a topic, the teacher should then beg to focus on strategic small group or individual instruction. Whole group instruction is most effective when it is immediately followed by small group instruction. Any teacher who does not see value in both whole group and small group instruction is limiting their effectiveness. Whole group instruction should occur first, for many of the reasons discussed above, but it should immediately be followed with small group instruction.  Small group instruction helps solidify the concepts learned in the whole group setting, allows the teacher identify struggling students, and take another approach with them to help them master the content.

The sites that I visited personally were the Muslim and Hindu places of worship. The Muslim site that was visited was the mosque known as the Masjid Sultan. This mosque is located in the vicinity of Kampong Glam. The street where it stands is Muscat Street. I visited the mosque on the 28th of September, 2017 at two oclock in the afternoon. The other site that was visited is the Hindu Temple known as Sri Mariamman. This Temple is located in Chinatown. I visited the site personally on the 27th September, 2017 at ten in the morning. Site Description Masjid Sultan- The inside consists of the main hall where congregants assemble every Friday for prayers. There is also an annex which caters for the overflow in case the main hall is full. The decorations on the walls inside the mosque are words from the holy Quran, written in Arabic. On the outside, there is a minaret from where calls to prayer are made. There is a dome covered with gold and on its top stands the crescent moon and star. There is also a place for ceremonial washing before prayers. The two distinct features that manifest the integration of Islamic practice and belief are place of washing and the crescent and star. Sri Mariamman- The inside consists of the main hall for prayers where three deities are located: Shiva, Ganesh and Durga. The shrine housing Shiva is preeminent amongst the others. There are statutes of the five Pandavas close by which are overshadowed by the statue of Lord Krishna (Halverson 1996).On the outside there is a flagpole which is used to raise the flag during major festivals. The top of the Temple is decorated with tiers of sculptures of Hindu gods. There is also a spire that juts out amongst the sculptured deities on the outside. The two distinct features are the spire and the many sculptured deities that give representation of Hindu beliefs and practices. Reflection- Significance of meanings Masjid Sultan-The washing place on the outside has significance in the Quran which stipulates that practitioners must be ceremonially clean before entering the mosque. At home, they are also required to be clean before reading the Quran (Noss 2008). They are required to do a partial ablution which includes the washing of hands and feet. Every mosque is expected to make provision for this element of practice. The crescent moon is important as it is the representation of the moon which signals the start of the holy month of Ramadan. This month is considered to be important in reconnecting Muslims back to Allah through fasting, charity and prayers. Sri Mariamman- The spire which is known as the shikhara which means mountain has significance for the Hindu adherent. Hindus believe that gods reside in the mountains and the spire symbolizes this by pointing upwards. It also symbolizes that the devotee should ascend upwards in their devotion and enlightenment (Ellwood McGraw 2009). The sculptured gods serve to remind the devotee that they worship many gods. The multiple gods all ultimately represent the absolute supreme referred to as Brahman. The multiplicity of the sculptured gods allows for inclusion and gives freedom as to which god one can fellowship with and worship. Significance- Social impact Masjid Sultan- The mosques serves different purposes in the society. It is used as a place where Muslim weddings are officiated. It also serves as the primary distribution point from where alms collected are distributed to the poor (Braswell 1996). This makes justice available to the common man without resorting to the instituted laws of the land. When Muslims need arbitration on personal issue, it serves as the first place where they meet. Noss (2008), states that Islamic studies are also given here with the aim of increasing the understanding of the adherents concerning Islam. Seminars, literary discussions are given at the mosque regularly. Evers (2008) states that charity given to the poor during Ramadan helps build social integration with other cultures and religions. Sri Mariamman- The temple serves as the registry of Hindu marriages performed in Singapore. It equally serves as a place of refuge and social orientation for new Hindu migrants into Singapore. The annex that is built nearby the main Temple is a multi-purpose centre for different activities. Hindu owners of companies can use the annex to host corporate meetings instead of commercial hotels. Companies can also book the annex for seminars. The management of the Temple regularly organizes seminars where the devotees are taught about the religion.
